Have you ever seen a beach with black sand? Because of constant volcanic activity, you'll find white sands and black sands on the island of Hawaii. Located on the southeastern Ka'u coast, Punaluu Black Sand Beach is one of the most famous black sand beaches in Hawaii.
Located between the towns of Pahala and Naalehu in Ka'u, Punaluu Black Sand Beach's jet black shores are an unforgettable sight. Coconut palms fringe the upper edge of sand and you may also discover large Honu, (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles), basking on the beach.

Saddle Road
Saddle Road, Hawaii, is considered among the most spectacular roads in the world. This is 55-mile drive of a chance of a lifetime experience. Hawaii’s Route 200 goes through all four of her climates – tropical forests, arid desert, lush grasslands and misty mountaintop fog. Between miles 19 and 23, you’ll see a few places with lava flows and young vegetation and trees. But just after Saddlehouse Road, you’ll see the ridges that show where a 1936 flow slowly came to a stop 2 miles away. Near the road you can see where lava thickened and left the telltale mounds of a slowing flow. From here, you’ll continue through the volcanic aftermath of hundreds of thousands of years of lava activity as you head toward Belt Road, where you’ll eventually descend into Kona or Waikoloa.

Rainbow Falls
On sunny days, rainbows appear in the mist of the 80-foot falls, making for some pretty magical views. The broad waterfall — nearly 100 feet in diameter — plunges over a natural lava cave and into the river below.

When it rains, (which it often does in Hilo), the engorged Wailuku River makes the falls wider, muddier and louder. On these days, you won’t see the rainbows for which this spot is named, but the sheer volume of water and the accessibility of this spot for all ages make it a fun, quick and easy excursion.

The tour was full of information and the driver (David) was very good. He showes us all the placess on tour. But also told us of some great markets and things to do while on island. Interacted well with whole group and made it feel personal.

Ranger Dean gave a fabulous tour to the rim of the volcano. He was most entertaining as well as super informative on local plants, animals and Hawaiian restoration.

Amazing time with very knowledgeable geologist. The vehicle was clean and comfortable. The restaurant lunch mid day was amazing (so much better than the other tours we saw eating boxed lunches outside), This is the tour to book!

Knowledge and experience makes it happen. Our drivers were owners and both training and experiences geologist. It was quite a drive but questions were answered all the way to our destination. Rainbow Falls, snacks provided, the daytime stop to see Kīlauea and some jumping red lava, the steam vents scattered around, Lava Rock lunch, a trek thru a lava tunnel, views from Volcano Hotel, dinner at Lava Rock and back to see Kīlauea at night full of red lava and a red glow. It was truly amazing. These guys are absolutely the best with their tours!
One of the best tours ever

What an excellent way to get to know the Big Island and learn about its unique place on Earth. Our tour guide Eric picked us up on time at our rented villa along with a number of other visitors and we proceeded to spend one of the better days on a tour of the island. Eric is one of the proprietors of the tour, is a degreed geologist and is truly an engaging and friendly person. The tour was excellent which combined both interesting sights and a tremendous amount of local knowledge about lava flows and local history. To say that this was worth the day spent would be to put it mildly. Even at twice the price, I would happily do this again and recommend the tour to anyone.
Most Chill Adventure!

A beautiful combination of passion, personality and professionalism. A memorable day to say the least, Zane was kind enough to show us his backyard & impressive Geological expertise. Would recommend this experience to families/couples of all ages!
