Het enige zwarte zandstrand in de Hilo-regio biedt ontspannende, beschutte rotszwembaden voor prachtig snorkelen en uitstekend surfen.
Lava van Mauna Kea heeft een natuurlijke zeewering gevormd in Richardson Ocean Park, waardoor het een beschut strand is dat perfect snorkelt met gigantische zeeschildpadden, monniksrobben en een overvloedig zeeleven. Rotspoelen die bij hoogtij opvullen, zorgen bij eb voor ondiepe, vrijstaande zwemgaten. Snorkelen in de zwembaden, zonder de stress van deining of stromingen.

We were the only 2 booked for that day. Our guide Forest was great. My husband can't swim and is afraid of water. Forest made him feel comfortable and stayed by his side. We had a great time and really appreciated that they didn't cancel us. Mahalo.

Today was an incredible experience! We went snorkeling with Morgan! He was an amazing guide and really was adaptable to the groups abilities. He took us to two amazing spots where we saw green sea turtles and many fish such as wrasse, angel fish, and many more interesting fish! It was a memorable experience. We also expressed to him that one of us was a birder and needed the Nene for a life bird experience! He helped us capture a memory by finding the Nene! What a wonderful knowledgeable experience we had on this little trip. Thank you Morgan for your hospitality!
Fun lightweight snorkel trip with dedicated guides

I took my family of 8 for an introductory snorkel while in Hilo, and it went very well. The tour has two stops via van, fairly close to the dive shop, and our hosts Morgan and Matt did a great job orienting us to what to see and do while snorkeling around both of them. While great to see a sea turtle, they weren't as much of a constant presence as the fish at the first location. The second location was a bit more difficult to get in, but well worth the trip and I would suggest wrapping up a little sooner at the "kiddie pool" sea turtle area and moving on to the lagoon sooner so that energy levels are higher for the choppier, but deeper waters.
Both guides were great and committed to sharing what they knew; Morgan made an excellent person to chat with about Hilo attractions and oriented us well to the the dive sites, whereas Matt gave off great dive master vibes and did his best to get us exploring deeper with the snorkel gear.
If you have little or no comfort with snorkeling or ocean swimming in particular, this is a great beginner's tour -- several in our group were completely new to this, and they were eased very nicely into the water. Even if you're competent in the water it made for a fun few hours, and was a good taste of what the dive shop can offer on later trips.

Just got back to our hotel after doing this trip. Absolutely incredible! Lucky enough to sea turtles right away! Morgan was an incredible guide putting his marine studies knowledge to our benefit! Highly recommend.
